Cudgen Lake
A hidden wetland treasure surrounded by floodplain forest and rainforests. Look out over the calm waters and you’ll see World Heritage-listed Wollumbin National Park with the majestic Mount Warning dominated in the west.
Cudgen Lake is in Cudgen Nature Reserve. It is home to plenty of birdlife, making it a great spot for bird watching. The lake and surrounding wetlands are a great place to see black swan and waterbirds like the Australian white ibis or the white-faced heron. You’ll also see shorebirds including pied oystercatcher, osprey and sea eagles. You can listen to the chorus of sound from the kookaburras and stone curlew.
The kids will love swimming in the shallow waters of the lake. Launch your boat and enjoy sailing or windsurfing on the lake. Perhaps take our kayaks and head off to explore the nearby creeks. Try your luck fishing, or just sit back and enjoy the tranquility.
For a modest reserve, there is certainly an enormous variety of vegetation, ranging from coastal dunes to heath, swamp forests to rainforests, and the beautiful wetlands on Cudgen Lake and surrounding estuaries. Much of the reserve is listed as an Endangered Ecological Community (EEC), including swamp oak, swamp melaleuca forest, littoral and lowland subtropical rainforest, and freshwater wetlands Cabarita Beach / Bogangar is a small coastal village with 3000 residents.
It is renowned for its beach dunes and is a favourite place for swimming and surfing. It hosts many carnivals during the year. Cabarita Beach offers uninterrupted views over the ocean; Dolphin and whale-watching is a local pastime.
The village boasts the only beachside hotel in the Tweed Shire, It has the Cabarita Sports Club, many restaurants, cafes, speciality shops and a Woolworths and Coles nearby.
The once sleepy village is turning into a thriving hotspot for people from Brisbane, Interstate and overseas.
